Medical Assistant in Sacramento: Pay, Costs, and Requirements

Sacramento may have the best salary-to-rent math of any major California market for Medical Assistants. The metro median is $62,570, nearly identical to Silicon Valley, while average rent runs about half of what San Jose charges. Here's what the job looks like in Sacramento: pay, cost of living, who's hiring, and what California requires.

What You'd Earn in Sacramento

Federal wage data reports Sacramento as part of the Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom metro area. Here's how that metro compares to the rest of California:

AreaMedian Salary
Santa Rosa-Petaluma$62,900
Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom$62,570
San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara$62,290
California statewide$48,050
Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim$46,000
Visalia$45,840
Bakersfield-Delano$45,240
Fresno$44,700

Two numbers matter most here.

The Sacramento median of $62,570 sits about $18,370 above the national median of $44,200, and it's the second highest metro figure in California.

It also sits about $14,520 above the California statewide median. Sacramento pays at Bay Area levels without Bay Area housing costs, which is the whole story of this market.

The Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom metro median of $62,570 is roughly 42% above the national median for Medical Assistants (BLS, 2024).

What It Costs to Live There

This is where Sacramento separates itself from the rest of California.

Let's put those two tables together.

At the Sacramento median of $62,570, you're bringing in about $5,214 a month before taxes. A one-bedroom at $1,689 takes roughly 32% of that, right around the 30% guideline most landlords use. A studio at $1,577 takes 30%. Splitting a two-bedroom brings your share to about $979, or 19%.

That's the standout finding in this series. A one-bedroom on your own is genuinely workable here on a single Medical Assistant salary, which is not true in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, or San Francisco. Sacramento pays within $400 of Silicon Valley while a one-bedroom costs about $1,320 less per month.

Rents are also falling. Citywide rents are down about 0.9% year over year, and downtown is down about 4.7%.

A one-bedroom in Sacramento averages $1,689 a month, which is about 32% of the metro's median Medical Assistant income (RentCafe, July 2026; BLS, 2024).

Who's Hiring

Four large systems dominate the Sacramento hospital market, and all four have been expanding their footprints.

EmployerWhere They AreWhat They Offer Medical Assistants
UC Davis HealthHeadquartered in SacramentoThe county's second-largest employer, with a 627-bed nationally ranked teaching hospital, a Level I trauma center, a children's hospital, an NCI-designated cancer center, and a 1,000-member physician group supporting more than 20,000 jobs
Sutter HealthHeadquartered in Sacramento, four hospitals in the regionSutter Medical Center Sacramento is the largest at 523 beds, and the system operates numerous care centers across the region
Dignity Health (CommonSpirit)Mercy hospitals across the greater Sacramento regionThe largest share of regional hospital discharges, with nationally ranked hospitals and extensive outpatient services
Kaiser PermanenteMedical centers and clinics across the regionResponsible for roughly a quarter of regional discharges, running an integrated model with heavy outpatient Medical Assistant staffing

Two things make Sacramento distinctive.

First, two systems are headquartered here. Both Sutter Health and UC Davis Health have their headquarters in Sacramento, which means corporate, administrative, and clinical roles concentrated in one metro rather than spread across a region.

Second, the market is genuinely balanced. Dignity, Kaiser, Sutter, and UC Davis each hold meaningful shares of regional discharges, with no single system dominating the way Kaiser does in some California markets. For a job seeker, that means four real options rather than one obvious one.

The California Rule You Need to Know

California regulates Medical Assistants more specifically than most states, and the details directly affect your training.

California does not license Medical Assistants. Business and Professions Code section 2069 defines a Medical Assistant as a person "who may be unlicensed." There's no state exam and no state credential.

But California does set requirements. To work as a Medical Assistant here you must be at least 18 years old and have completed training appropriate to the tasks you'll perform. Your training institution or instructor issues a certificate of completion, and your employer is required to keep a copy on file.

For certain clinical tasks, the regulations specify minimum hours. Under 16 CCR 1366.1:

  1. Ten clock hours of training to administer intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections and perform skin tests
  2. Ten clock hours of training in venipuncture and skin puncture for drawing blood
  3. Satisfactory performance of at least ten each of intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections and ten skin tests, and/or at least ten venipunctures and ten skin punctures
  4. Ten clock hours for administering medication by inhalation, which must be taught by a physician or respiratory care practitioner

Training must also cover anatomy and physiology, equipment selection, sterile technique, hazards and complications, patient care after the procedure, emergency procedures, and California law for Medical Assistants.

California is explicit that these hours are minimums, not targets. Training continues until you demonstrate proficiency to your supervising physician or instructor (16 CCR 1366.1).

There's one more California rule worth knowing before you take a job here. Your supervisor must be physically present in the treatment facility while you perform authorized procedures. This isn't general oversight, it's on-premises supervision, and it shapes how clinics schedule Medical Assistants.

California also draws clear lines on what you cannot do. Medical Assistants may not administer local anesthetic agents, may not diagnose or treat, and may not perform clinical laboratory tests they aren't separately authorized to run.

Certification is voluntary in California, and it isn't what makes you legally eligible to work. What makes you eligible is documented training that meets the standards above. Certification signals to employers that you've also met a national benchmark, and in a competitive market that matters at the hiring stage. The CCMA, CMA, RMA, and NCMA are the most commonly recognized credentials.

What Training Costs in Sacramento

The Sacramento region has a wide tuition range for programs leading to the same credential.

Program TypeApproximate CostLength
Community College Certificate~$2,500-$6,000Two semesters
Community College Associate Degree~$5,000-$12,000Two years
Private Career Program~$12,000-$20,0009-12 months
Private Diploma Program~$20,000+One year

California community colleges are among the lowest-cost options in the country, which makes the gap between routes unusually large here. You sit for the same exam either way.

One thing to verify before enrolling anywhere in California: confirm the program delivers the 16 CCR 1366.1 hours and the documented injection and venipuncture repetitions, and that you'll receive the certificate of completion your employer is required to keep on file. Verify current tuition directly with any school, since these figures shift year to year.

Why Sacramento Is a Great Place to Start

Sacramento offers the combination this series rarely finds: wages near the top of California and rents a Medical Assistant salary can actually cover on its own. A one-bedroom takes about a third of the metro median income here, and rents are trending down rather than up.

The employer picture is just as strong. Four large systems compete for market share, two of them headquartered in the city, plus an academic medical center with a Level I trauma center, a children's hospital, and a cancer center. That's real variety without a long commute.

California's training requirements are the most specific in the country, which means a program that documents your hours properly matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Where MangoStudy Fits

California requires documented training rather than certification, and certification is voluntary. But in the state with more Medical Assistants than any other, a national credential is how you stand out at the hiring stage. The CCMA is issued by the NHA and is one of the most commonly recognized credentials among California employers.

MangoStudy's Medical Assistant program prepares you to sit for that exam. It runs 12 weeks, fully online, with CCMA exam prep and the test fee included. Tuition is a one-time $1,995, no subscriptions or recurring charges. You also get live sessions with instructors, an at-home clinical kit, 1-on-1 career counseling, and help finding an externship near you if you want the 80 hours of in-person clinical experience.

One note for California specifically: confirm with any program, including ours, how it addresses the state's 16 CCR 1366.1 injection and venipuncture hour requirements, since those are separate from exam preparation.

Sacramento has the jobs, the pay, and the demand. Getting certified is where the path starts, and twelve weeks is a lot closer than it sounds.
