Overview
Safety extends beyond clinical procedures to the physical environment and documentation of unexpected events.
1. Ergonomics & Injury Prevention
Safe Lifting (The LEGS Method)
- Load Close: Keep object close to body.
- Evaluate: Get help if too heavy.
- Get footing: Wide base of support.
- Straight back: Bend at the knees, never the waist. Lift with legs.
Workstation Ergonomics
- Monitor at eye level.
- Elbows and knees at 90-degree angles.
2. Reporting & Documenting
Knowing which form to use is a high-yield exam topic.
| Form Type | Purpose | When to Use |
|---|---|---|
| Incident Report | Internal documentation of any unusual event (falls, errors, minor injuries). | A patient falls, a visitor faints, or an MA makes a mistake. Internal use only (do not file in medical record). |
| OSHA Form 301 | Official reporting of serious work-related injuries/illnesses. | Injuries requiring medical treatment beyond first aid or days off work. |
| QC Log | Routine tracking of equipment. | Fridge temps, autoclave tests. |
3. Safety Audits
- MAs are responsible for ensuring fire extinguishers are checked, exits are clear, and hazardous materials (SDS binders) are accessible.
